At Last, Committees Allowed to Work!

February 23, 2012

Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell was very pleased to learn of his appointment to the Standing Committee on Government Agencies. The Committee is tasked with overseeing and reviewing appointments to Crown Corporations and various Government agencies, as well as holding those entities to account on administration and policy.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure transparency and good stewardship of Ontario’s government machine” – McDonell commented. “It’s a pity it took the Government this long to appoint the Committees in the first place”.

The new Legislative Assembly sat for the first time on November 21, 2011. “Four Bills have been languishing in a legislative limbo since before the winter break; – remarked the MPP with displeasure – They were referred to Committees that, until today, could not meet, discuss them or return them to the House”.

Jim McDonell, MPP questioned the Government’s motive for delaying the appointment of Committee members during a time as delicate as pre-Budget season. “If McGuinty truly believed Ontario’s troubles were common to all of us, why would he not seek sound, thought-out legislative input that Committees can provide? The PC caucus is at Queen’s Park to help enact a sustainable solution to the difficulties this Government has heaped upon the Province. While we offer a helping hand, McGuinty indulges in gimmicks. No more.”
