MPP Grant Crack Fights to Keep Taxpayers in the Dark About the Costs of Cancelled Power Plants

June 14, 2012

QUEEN’S PARK – Jim McDonell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry is disappointed to learn that Grant Crack, MPP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, along with other Liberal members, is obstructing the work of the Legislature’s Estimates Committee. The Committee has a mandate to question the Ministry of Energy over its expenditure estimates for the fiscal year 2012 and PC members want to know how much the rushed cancellation of the Mississauga and Oakville power plants will cost taxpayers. The cancellations, one occurring mere days before the October 6 election, were designed to save Liberal seats in the Greater Toronto Area. Industry experts anticipate the breach of contract penalties and legal fees required to resolve the several pending lawsuits resulting from the cancellations to exceed $1 billion. This is in addition to the wasted engineering and construction work that could potentially cost an extra $1 billion.

On May 16, the four Liberal members of the Estimates Committee voted against a motion by PC MPP Rob Leone to request correspondence and other related files from the Ministry of Energy concerning the power plants.

“MPP Grant Crack and his fellow Liberal members are obstructing a Committee that wants to get to the bottom of a scandal that saddles Ontarians with a tremendous penalty” said McDonell. “The McGuinty Government is making the people of Eastern Ontario pay for saving Liberal seats in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Mr Crack voted against requesting documents from the Ministry and is actively delaying the Committee’s work. In one sitting, the member for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell asked for 5 twenty-minute recesses, effectively cutting the time for the committee to do its work in half. The same thing is happening in the committee looking into the ORNGE Air Ambulance scandal, where Liberal members use obstruction tactics to prevent the people of Ontario from getting to the truth.”

Jim McDonell, MPP is calling for Grant Crack to speak up: “I believe Mr Crack has some explaining to do to the people of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. If he is truly concerned about our area paying for saving Liberal seats in the GTA, he should act accordingly and demand answers from the Ministry of Energy.”
