MPP Jim McDonell Welcomes Hwy 401 Improvements

January 22, 2013

CORNWALL – The federal and provincial governments are jointly funding improvements to the Cornwall Centre Road bridges over Highway 401. The project will utilize heavy-lift technology, which will shorten road closures by half, to one construction season.

Reached en route from meetings in Toronto, Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell highlighted the importance of sound infrastructure to economic development: “We enjoy a strategically favorable location, including easy access to three major urban areas, the St Lawrence Seaway and the United States. Highway 401 plays an essential role in the region’s attractiveness to many industries, including distribution, as shown by the new Target and Shoppers’ Drug Mart centres. I am pleased that this major artery will be improved and that our residents will reap the benefits of this project one year earlier thanks to the use of the best construction technology.”

The funding will be made available through the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund, which will receive $175 million from both the Ontario and Federal governments for the purpose of infrastructure improvement.
