MPP Jim McDonell Grills Minister on Waste

October 2, 2013

QUEEN’S PARK – During today’s Question Period, MPP Jim McDonell took the Minister of Finance to task over the un-budgeted $719 million expense for building the 2015 Pan-Am Games athletes’ village.

“No-one in Government appears to have any idea where this money will come from” – said MPP McDonell. “Estimates Committee has been stonewalled by the Minister responsible for the games, and eventually other Ministry budgets will be pillaged. The affordable housing budget is especially in danger – the Government could claim the Village to be a future mixed-income development due in 2015, and take money that is needed today to provide affordable housing and repair existing real estate in Cornwall, Stormont-Dundas and South Glengarry and all other parts of the Province”.

“It is unacceptable that the Liberal Government has turned a blind eye to a culture of entitlement at the heart of the Pan-Am Games executive team” – continued MPP McDonell.

McDonell added, “It’s time to get Ontario back on track to competent and accountable spending.”

The Pan-Am games have been recently mired in controversy over excessive executive pay and questionable travel and entertainment expenses. The cost of building the athletes’ village has not even been included in the Games’ $1.4 billion price tag.
