Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals Owe Ontarians an Apology

QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Jim McDonell challenged the Government in Question Period today regarding their failure to ensure proper maintenance on provincial highways during the winter of 2013-2014.

“Kathleen Wynne, as then Minister of Transportation, changed winter maintenance policies to save a few bucks” – MPP McDonell commented. “Last week’s Auditor-General’s report highlighted how Ontarians’ lives were put at risk by this Liberal Government that then refused to acknowledge the mistake, against the advice of ministry engineers. No Minister has shown any remorse for this fiasco”.

The new winter maintenance contracts were sometimes awarded to contractors who could not prove to have sufficient equipment units to maintain safe circuit times. On other occasions, the Government ignored contractors’ feedback regarding the need for extra units and materials.

“The 2013-2014 winter season made driving in our region more hazardous because of the Government’s mismanaged maintenance, when plowing units were cut by almost 50%” – MPP McDonell stated. “When contractors raised their concerns, the Government tried to silence them. In the end, the Government had to bail out the lowest bidders with extra high-cost plowing units. The contracting process was flawed from day one, and the Liberals made it worse by removing key safety and service standards from the contractual requirements. Ontarians trust their elected Government to act in the public interest and focus on safety. Through the Liberals’ incompetence, people’s lives were put at risk, and fatalities occurred as a result. This is unacceptable.”
