MPP McDonell Encourages Local Attendance at Merrickville School Closure Consultation

May 1, 2017

QUEEN’S PARK – The government appointed a panel of three MPPs drawn from the Liberal caucus only to review rural education and the panel’s meeting schedule has just been released. The closest meeting to the Cornwall and SD&G region will be held this Friday night, May 5th, 6.30pm at the Eastons Corners / Merrickville-Woldford Community Centre, 43 Park Street, Merrickville, ON  K0G 1G0.

“I encourage all residents of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry to make their way to Merrickville and attend this very important meeting” MPP McDonell stated. “All schools matter. The government refuses to impose a moratorium on school closures, despite the obvious need to review how we deliver all services to rural Ontario, including education. By failing to travel more extensively through our region, the government’s Liberal-only panel shows a clear unwillingness to hear from as many school communities facing closure as possible. Moreover, the schedule hasn’t been publicized widely enough to allow all interested parties to prepare their case. Ontarians have shown on numerous occasions that they are willing to travel in all conditions to voice their demand for better access to education in rural Ontario – this meeting should be no exception. It is important that we stand up for our children’s education and our rural quality of life.”
