Organic Regulation

PETITION

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:

 

WHEREAS   Canada is now the 5th largest organic market in the world and expanding by over 10% annually;

 

WHEREAS   the Federal government adopted the Canada Organic Standards in 2009 for products labeled organic that are traded outside of their province of origin;

 

WHEREAS   the Canada Organic Trade Association rated Ontario lowest amongst all provinces for regulation, support and development of organic products;

 

WHEREAS   anyone in Ontario is free to use the term “organic” on any product, even if they are not certified, as long as they do not use the logo or trade across provincial borders;

 

WHEREAS   proper regulation and enforcement is required to give Ontarians confidence that they are purchasing quality organic produce,

 

WHEREAS   five other provinces have already enacted organic legislation to address this gap;
